| Discover the best of the Kimberley. From the endless expanse of white sand of Broome’s Cable Beach, the rugged ranges, cascading waterfalls and mighty rivers, to the fascinating geological landmark of the Bungle Bungles in Purnululu National Park, this is an adventure that you will cherish forever. | ||
| Day 1: Broome – Windjana
Gorge Depart Broome and head to the Derby Prison for a short visit. We now leave the bitumen behind us as we enter the Gibb River Road and almost instantly we can feel the remoteness. A walk up Windjana Gorge this afternoon is sure to impress. Camp: Windjana National Park. Day 2: Bell Gorge This morning we’re off to Tunnel Creek, so have your bathers and torches ready. This amazing tunnel cuts through the Napier Range and is rich in history. The afternoon sees us off to Bell Gorge. Camp: Silent Grove. Day 3: Manning Gorge Leaving Bell Gorge this morning, we travel through the beautiful scenery of the Kimberley’s highest mountain range, King Leopold Ranges, on our way to Galvans Gorge. This gorge will tempt you to don the bathers. For those feeling like a walk, a visit to Manning Gorge this afternoon is recommended. Camp: Mt. Barnett Station. Day 4: King Edward River Today we leave Gibb River Road, and travel Kalumburu Road to Mitchell Plateau, visiting Drysdale River Station. Our camp will be on the banks of the river where we can take an afternoon dip or explore the area before dinner. Bush Camp: King Edward River, 2 nights. Day 5: Mitchell Plateau and Falls We make full use of our 4WD capacity today to take us to the Mitchell Plateau. Livistonia palms abound in this rugged region. Experience an optional helicopter flight over these falls (own expense) and see some of the most remote country in the world. While swimming and overlooking the cascading falls, take a moment out, realising just where you are on the map. Day 6: El Questro Station This morning we briefly visit Aboriginal paintings in the area before departing our river camp and Mitchell Plateau and travel back down Kalumburu Road to rejoin Gibb River Road. Our journey takes us through the majestic Cockburn Ranges – have your |
cameras ready as we make our way towards El Questro Wilderness Park, one
of the world’s few remaining wild frontiers.
We may arrive in time to catch the
spectacular sunset behind the ranges. Camp: El Questro Station. Day 7: El Questro – Kununurra There is time at leisure this morning to walk into stunning Emma Gorge, for a rewarding swim in the crystal clear waters. We then head to the Kimberley town of Kununurra, one of the youngest towns in Western Australia which is the hub of local industry for agriculture, tourism and mining in east Kimberley. Camp: Kununurra, 2 nights. Day 8: Kununurra at Leisure A free day for you to enjoy the many attractions of Kununurra. Day 9: Bungle Bungles An early start as we’re off to the Bungle Bungles unbelievable beehive dome formations and plunging gorges that will leave you breathless. Visit Echidna Chasm with its 150 metre sheer rock face and for those feeling energetic, enjoy a walk to Mini Palms (time permitting). Camp: Purnululu National Park. Day 10: Kununurra Today take in the wonder of Purnululu, starting with an optional helicopter flight (own expense) over this amazing sight is a must. Walk to Cathedral Gorge then enjoy lunch in the beehive dome region of the park before the winding journey back to the town of Kununurra. Camp: Kununurra. Day 11: Katherine A relaxing morning and a visit to Lake Argyle, Australia’s largest man-made lake, before we cross the Northern Territory border for the journey to Katherine for our overnight stay. Camp: Katherine Gorge. Day 12: Darwin This morning we visit Katherine Gorge where there is time for an optional cruise (own expense). Our lunch stop today is at Edith Falls. We then travel on the Stuart Highway en route to our final destination point of the tropical city of Darwin where our Kimberley adventure ends! |
